  • Preview of 3 in-progress WordPress restaurant themesview →

For the past couple of months, I’ve been working on a series of restaurant style WordPress themes. I’m planning on releasing them for free in the next couple of months. Here’s a quick preview of what’s to come:

  • Adventure[s] Broken Hearted Ball: Breakup/Hookup Posterview →

My brother recently asked me to design a poster for one of his Adventure[s] parties. I’m not really that great with poster/graphic design, but I gave it a go and am pleased with the result:

  • Book Cover Redesignsview →

Book covers, I’ve noticed, are becoming increasingly more attractive. While you can’t necessarily judge a book by its cover, an eye-catching cover is a great way to get someone’s attention. Often, when I want to pick up something new, I wander around a bookstore looking for something that looks visually interesting. I find a cover that appeals to me, read the synopsis, and if it sounds awesome I’ll get it. Covers definitely play an important role in that initial attraction to an unfamiliar book or series.

Recently, there’s been a pretty big influx of redesigned book covers in bookstores. My favorite, unsurprisingly, are the new Song of the Lioness covers:

Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce cover redesign
In The Hands of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce cover redesign
The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce cover redesign
Lioness Rampant by Tamora Pierce cover redesign

I need to resist the urge to buy the whole set again just for shiny new covers (I already have three sets). Seriously. I’m kind of obsessed.

Anyway, Tamora Pierce books aside, I recently came across this gallery of recently redesigned book covers, and damn, they look good! Here are a few examples:

Little Red Riding Hood Cover Redesign
His Dark Materials series cover redesign

Does anyone else have any book covers recently redesigned that you like?

  • I love painted lettering on old buildingsview →

    Old sign in Northampton

I love finding great typography on buildings. The older, the better.  Northampton in particular has a lot of this — look around you downtown and you’ll see examples everywhere. There are many faded signs on buildings all around town, including right across from my own workplace. I’ll take some more pictures some time and post them up.

This particular example is right next to Thornes. I’m pretty sure there used to be a sign over it, since I only just recently noticed this. Love the lettering and the details.

Hand-painted advertising in general is a fascinating, dying art. If you’re interested in learning about it, check out Ghost Signs: The Dying Art of Hand-Painted Advertisements.

  • Awesome, well-designed local poster for Josh Ritter concertview →

    Josh Ritter poster

(sorry for the quality — cellphone pic!)

I was walking into town from work other day when I noticed this poster tacked up. It immediately caught my attention! Love the typography, first of all (Archer is so sexy), and the overall silhouetted/banner style is great. Definitely a big step up from most other concert posters I see around town. It’s very professional and “designed” looking.

Anyone know who designed this? @mollyampersand thinks it might be Rob & Damia. (Love their work!) Can anyone confirm?

Edit: Designer found! Poster courtesy of Matt Fleming at http://www.blackt-shirt.com/.

  • Pistashio Appview →

    pistashioapp:

Today we introduced a new face to Pistashio, you might have already noticed him in the top-left of the site. You will be seeing a lot more of this little guy as we evolve Pistashio. You will see him in many different costumes, sporting new gear and always switching up his mustache style!

The one things he’s missing though, is a name. And that’s where you come in. We would like our users to let us know what they think his name should be. Remember, he’s a unique guy, a nut of many talents, so he needs a name that reflects that.

Add your ideas to this posts and we’ll take the top 5 and have users vote on them in the coming months.
